What was achieved

A people argued their way out of an empire on a written principle, then built a government that limited itself, and handed power on without a sword. That government still stands.

What it cost

They wrote “all men are created equal” while holding roughly 700,000 people in bondage, and negotiated protections for that bondage into the structure of the state.

Both entries are true. A ledger counts both sides — that is the whole idea.
